In most common law jurisdictions, the attorney general, or attorney-general, is the main legal advisor to the government, and in some jurisdictions he or she may in addition have executive responsibility for law enforcement or responsibility for public prosecutions.
The term is used to refer to any person who holds a general power of attorney to represent a principal in all matters. In the common law tradition, anyone who represents the state, especially in criminal prosecutions, is such an attorney. The Attorney General of the US is a member of the President's cabinet and so advises the President on legal issues when called upon. He gave more legal advice before the President had lawyers on his White House staff. His main job nowadays is to run the Department of Justice, which is charged with enforcing federal laws. The divisions of the Justice department are Ant-trust, Civil law, Criminal law , Civil Rights, Environment and Resources laws, Tax law, Justice management, and National Security. Justice also includes law enforcement such as the FBI, federal marshals, ATF, DEA (drug enforcement) and federal prisons.
