Back in victorian ages, people went about their lives in very prim and proper etiquette. Ladies were ladies, men were gentlemen. Imagine feeling cooped up all the time, worried about what others would think of your behavior-then attending a party where you got to hide your features. You could say (and do) what you wanted with people you knew, but were strangers because they hid their identity. That's why they were so popular. They are making a comeback too, I've heard.
