Alters have been built for religious purposes since the days of Adam, when he built an alter as a sacred place to worship God and to offer up his sacraments. Alters are special places dedicated for the purpose of performing sacred rites. They are blessed and consecrated for that very purpose.

In Hebrew Times, the Altar served as the most holy sacred place of the church, people only went into it during a special celebration and for special offerings. Altars are made to place offerings to God, like food, wine, sacrafises (not necessarily death but in Hebrew times it was not uncommon).

Today Altars serve as a center of Spiritual Energy, while christians believe that prayng with God CAN occur anywhere, many believe the altar creates a concentration of God's energy or as in the Eastern Churches, a reduction in the world's distraction energy. Altars today vary from church to church. In Eastern churches, each church has relics placed inside the altar of past saints, martyrs, and holy objects to honor the church and remind the people of God's presence. In many altars, the purpose is merely a focus point, a table or often in modern churches, a podium.
