== == When it's on, you can type with the numbers that are on the side, but if it's off then you can't use the number pad The reason you might want to do this is, originally many keyboards did not have a number pad that was separate from the arrow keys. The Num Lock key was used to toggle between arrow and number modes for the 10-key pad.
In the past with less up to date keyboards the numbers and arrows were as one key. So therefore the Num Lock key was used so people could use one or the other.
I guess makers of keyboards forgot to take it off the updated keyboards!
Having this activated enables the numeric keys to be used like a calculator. With the "num lock" deactivated, those numbers become a cursor [mouse pointer] directional aid.
I dont know for sure but I think it was used by programmers to run a program

To switch off the Num Lock, simply look for the Num lock key on your computer's keyboard, and make sure it is set t off. (You can do this by pressing the key and then trying to type on the number pad on the right-hand side of your keyboard; if it's on, those keys won't work).

The key containing a lock symbol with the number 9 in it is a "number lock key". It's usually displayed on the keyboard and is lighted when number lock or "num lock" is activated. When number lock is deactivated, your number pad becomes a direction pad containing arrow keys, page up/down keys, and home/end keys for cursor movement. This was before keyboards came with dedicated arrow keys. Many "old school" users still use the number pad for directional movement, however, there usually is no need with a dedicated arrow pad and mouse functions.
