Best Answer

The distance from the Earth to Mars is constantly changing as both planets orbit the Sun in different orbits and at different speeds.

As of Jaunary 14, 2014 at about 4:5 PM Pacific time, Mars is about 1.22449 AU, and closing. That's about 113,823,456 miles. But the Earth is catching up, because the Earth is in a closer, faster orbit, and we'll be at our closest point of approach on April 8, 2014. At that time, Mars will be at about 0.62 AU away, which is not especially close as oppositions go.

It varies. When earth is at aphelion (furthest distance from the sun) and Mars is at perihelion (closest distance) and both planets are on the same side of the sun, the distance shrinks to under half an AU, or 46 million miles.

When earth and Mars are on opposite sides of the sun, both at aphelion, the distance is maximized to 2.5 AU (232 million mlies).

On average the distance could be approximated by the hypotenuse of a right triangle with sides of 1 and 1.5 AU, about 1.8 AU or 167 million miles.

Bear in mind that as the planet Earth and the planet Mars both revolve around the sun, with the Earth orbiting more rapidly than Mars does, their relative positions are changing all the time. There is a huge difference between the closest approach of Mars, and its most distant position. The average is about 90 million miles. It is a very large distance. In comparison, the moon is only a quarter of a million miles away.
