The Flute has a range of 3 octaves, from middle C up to the C 3 octaves above. It is possible to attach a different foot joint which will allow you to play bottom B & Bb, but this does not come as standard. The flute sounds like the wind in spring.
On Normal flutes, the lowest note is C below the staff. More expensive ones have B foots that allow B below the staff. I once saw a picture of a flute that could play B flat even, but that's very rare. The highest note depends how strong you are at playing. I can play D sharp 4 (that's the fourth #D octave after #D below the staff), but there are fingerings for E4 or F4. You have to be pretty good at blowing hard enough to get the note out at that point, they have obscure fingerings.
up to about 4 octaves which is around 32 notes

In a band or woodwind ensemble, flute 1 and flute 2 are simply parts you play. Typically flute one will have more parts, or higher notes. Flute 2 will have less parts, or lower notes. THey have these so there's some harmony in the piece you are playing.

Flutes and piccolos are more than similar. They are both a part of the flute family. Think of the piccolo as a tiny flute replica (or a baby flute). The piccolo is made smaller than the the average concert flute so that the player can achieve higher notes with much more ease, comfort, and reliable tuning. This means that the piccolo can play some high notes that the concert flute can not play but the concert flute can play some lower notes that the piccolo can not play.
