What is the reality-TV show 'Big Brother' about?

A fictional character in the book "1984" by George Orwell. In that book BB was said to be the leader of Oceania, an empire comprising the Western Hemisphere, Australia and the United Kingdom.

However, it was apparent that the Inner Party leaders simply had the idea of Big Brother as a figurehead, that no one would ever meet, as he wasn't literally real. Any order they had for the Outer Party or proletarians, would be said to come from him.

They also faked films of him, giving speeches. And they used a photo purporting to be him for their ever present posters up all over Oceania.

His back story was that he was either a founder of the revolution that established IngSoc (English Socialism), or came in shortly after. He is typically Nordic in color and features, though with dark hair and a dark mustache.
