What is the reason for marking sheep with red ochre?

Answer

Ochre has been used as a marker to indicate which sheep have been worked or need to be culled from a flock. I use a type of spray paint to do the same thing. There are also large crayons for doing this. You could also put ochre on the chest of a ram and he will leave a mark on the ewes that he breeds so you can tell which have been bred.
