In Singapore, it is very common to find taxi drivers with a bundle of pandan leaves in the trunk of the taxi. The aroma of the leaves is suppose to drive roaches away. Normally, it will be left in the trunk for about 2 weeks and replaced. I keep them in the kitchen drawers and I do not see any roaches.
