Apparently some carpets release something called VOC's which are not so good for you. From my understanding this is really more from machine made and wall to wall carpets, not oriental hand knotted rugs

New carpet stinks how to deodorize?

The chemicals and dyes in new carpet takes causes the odors, and it takes while for the odors to dissipate, but there are a couple of things you can try. Sprinkle baking soda on the carpet, let sit overnight, then vacuum. Or you can spray the carpet with Febreeze. What I would do though, is both. I would first use the baking soda then I would spray with Febreeze AFTER vacuuming up the baking soda.

Can you put a refrigerator on carpet?

You could, but it's not advisable. Moisture content from the compressor has to go somewhere - usually into the drip pan, but if that overflows, it's going to wind up in the carpet, which acts like a sponge and will harbor that stale water and the associated odors until you can move the fridge and clean up the spills. Also, and spilled food inside the fridge, if it leaks out onto the carpet, could stain the carpet and/or leave bad odors in the carpet. Best to put the fridge on a surface other than carpet if at all possible.
