Nationalism is a desire to be politically independent, usually because the nation in question is being aggressively controlled by Another Country. Imperialism is when a country decides to start a control regimen in another country, usually for personal gain. The link between the two is that, imperialism leads to nationalism. People under a strict rule of another country want freedom, so they turn to nationalism and revolt, to fight for their freedom. (Think Vietnam.)

_____

On the contrary, I think that Nationalism leads to Imperialism. Nationalism is basically putting your country before all others. When you meet another country with that ideal, then that becomes competitive, and each nation refuses to recognize other interests, because of their own nation-focus, or nationalism. If something is good for *our* country, then we start not caring if it hurts some other country. Because each nation wants to prove its own superiority, it is unlikely to back down from the idea of expanding influence and territory or "shepherding" other smaller, inferior countries... which is what imperialism is.

As the state of a nation becomes worse, its inhabitants are likely to become more nationalistic. One familiar example of this is that the rise of National Socialism in Germany in the 1930's is thought to be linked to Germany's bad economic conditions and hyperinflation at that time. Nationalism is often a reaction to serious national problems because it is thought to be a possible remedy to those problems. In comparison, if a nation is doing well, people can take pride in their successful nation, but they also generally see no need to make a big deal about it. Success is taken for granted, only failure is likely to bring about a passionate reaction.
