The strong nuclear force is responsible ofmaintainingprotons and neutrons within the nucleus (its range is short) while the electromagnetic force is responsible of maintaining the electrons around the nucleus.

The electromagnetic force is about 10^11 times stronger than the weak interaction, at least in our Universe of today. It has been shown that these two forces can be derived from the electro-weak interaction. And, in our Universe, until 10^-12 seconds after the end of Inflation, these two forces were indistinguishable.
