For traditional Jews, there need be no criticisms of Judaism. You either accept it as a whole, or you do not. You either understand the laws as stemming from Divine wisdom, or you see them as superstitions.

If you see the Torah as God-given, then millions of examples of its depth and beauty present themselves to you as you study it. This is the system of the Talmud and midrashim.

If not, then every verse and quote can be ridiculed as being incompatible with your thoughts and values; values which change unpredictably from one generation to another.

Everyone has free choice (Deuteronomy 30:15-20). Thousands of irreligious Jews return each year to their roots, while some others leave their roots.

Judaism needs to apologize to no one. It gave the world ethical monotheism, including rights for orphans, widows, children and others, who in certain societies were and are abused wholesale.

It gave the Western world many of its values, including social justice.

It pioneered in women's rights.

It made its contribution to democracy.

It pioneered in outlawing cruelty to animals.

Religious Judaism has fewer instances of broken homes, insanity, depression, drug misuse, teen pregnancies, and other forms of social malaise, than does the irreligious Jewish community or the world at large.

The old city of Jerusalem is sacred to what 3 religions?

Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Though Islam doesn't view Jerusalem in the same manner as Judaism or Christianity. For Judaism and Christianity, Jerusalem is place of the world's foundation and the city where G-d's presence once rested. Islam's holy city is actually Mecca, in Saudi Arabia. Islam's claim to Jerusalem is political, not religious (or at least not at all in the way Christians and Jews view Jerusalem).

What did the old testament prophets view to be the ultimate apologetic?

Apologetics didn't come about until the formation of Christianity. There is no such concept in Judaism and the Tanach (Jewish Bible) as Judaism teaches that there are different paths for different people and therefore doesn't have to defend itself against other religions.

According to the view held by most Muslims, virtually all of the prophets mentioned in the Hebrew bible with the exception of Moses, and prophets sent all over the world. How was the role of religion shaped by the enlightenment?

Enlightenment thinkers preferred religious toleration and advocated it much more than any previous thinkers had. They accepted the idea that churches were simply for religious beliefs. Yet, it is important to keep in mind that toleration was still limited. Many Christians saw Jews as heretics and Christ killers. And even when Enlightenment thinkers condemned prosecution, they still thought of Judaism and Islam as backward religions. There were the exceptions, such as Gotthold Lessing and Moses Mendelssohn. Lessing argued, in his play Nathan the Wise(1779) that the three great monotheistic religions (Christianity, Islam, and Judaism) were all just different renditions of the truth. Religion is only true if it makes the believer virtuous. Mendelssohn took up the subject of Jewish identity in a series of writings. His most well-known work is On the Religious Authority of Judaism (1783). Here, he defended Jewish communities against anti-Semitic criticisms, yet also recommended that the Jewish community reform to be more tolerant and humanitarian. Thus, religion was looked at through a more open-minded point of view during the Enlightenment and its importance as an institution/dogma was lessened and became what it truly was: a belief.
