It was claimed in the Anderson tale that mermaids had a natural lifespan of 300 years, after which they dissolve into the ocean- this explains any lack of mermaid fossils or bodies- a very Science-Fictional device from Mr.Anderson! the Disney cartoon ends happily for all characters except the defeated Sea Witch. Ursula. In the original story the Sea Witch is humanoid and does not have a name. She comes across as almost a friendly character like an advisor- say a kid taking a found coin to a pawn shop, not really a villainess, but... Tragedy Inversion is a time-honored ( or dishonored) TV and Movie- and especially Disney- tactic. it was also done with Hunchback.
