The 2001 Passat wagon uses 5.7 pints of oil to 6.5 oil. Do not overfill as that may cause overflow to damage the catalytic converter.
Most likely that the oil cooler has failed or is failing. Having mine fixed now, 03 passat.

Oil quanitity depends on engine option. Use only 5w40 synthetic that is euopean formula specific. Must have one of these VW #'s on the label. VW 502 00 or VW 500 00 or VW 501 01. If the oil does not have one of theses spec #'s on the front or rear label but does say European formula do not use. Must have the VW # on it. If it does not you will risk damageing the catalytic converters or the engine. 2.0l engine uses 3.6L or 3.8Qts 1.8l engine uses 4.1L or 4.3Qts 2.8l engine uses 6.2L or 6.5Qts 4.0l engine uses 8.5L or 9.0Qts
