Youth is the spring of Life. It is the age of discovery and dreams. India is of largest youth population in the world today. The entire world is eyeing India as a source of technical manpower. They are looking at our youth as a source of talents at low costs for their future super profits. If Indian youth make up their mind and work in close unity with working class people, they can hold the political power in their hands. Indian youth has the power to make our country from developing nation to a developed nation. Is it a dream? No, their dreams take them to stars and galaxies to the far corners of the unknown and some of them like our own Kalpana Chawla pursue their dream, till they realize it and die for it in process.

The youth hopes for a world free of poverty, unemployment, inequality and exploitation of man by man. A world free of discrimination on the grounds of race, colour, language and gender. A world full of creative challenges and opportunities to conquer them.

The role of a child in this society should be first and foremost a gatherer of knowledge. Of course there are many roles a child can play. From entertainer to family and friends; as a helper to parents, family and society; to a servant of others. Children should not bear hard or even semi hard labor, as they are not mentally equiped to endure hardships of life at this age.

Development work should aim to empower young people to play an assertive and constructive role in the regeneration of their communities. The youth of any country is the future of that Nation hence they can play a major role in development work. Youth in development work has three distinctive roles

i) Working face to face with young people in a variety of settings including clubs and projects.

ii) Managing and supporting paid and volunteer workers.

iii) Formulation and development policies on government and non-governmental organizations

Youth workers undertake the roles based on the type of work they are engaged and will depend on the following

iv) Philosophical approach

v) Resources they have to work with young people.

The role of youth in development work is increasing the participation of the young people in national development and decision making or promoting youth empowerment. As many of the decisions which will be taken will influence the life of the young people in future they play an important role in decision making. As a youth and development worker, our role is to create an enabling and empowering environment for young people. There are many other negative forces acting in other direction like negative media images, shrinking employment etc. hence it's difficult to empower or encourage others until we are personally and professionally stable in our life.

Functions of youth in development work

i) Enabling: Enabling is about creating the environment in which the youth can act on their own behalf, and terms rather than relying on other people and professionals to do fro them. This enables and to ensure the following

a) Understanding and appreciating the cultural values and traditions of their group, society, and country.

b) They are values as a key part of their country's national, social economic and political life.

A youth worker using this approach can encourage young people to develop new skills, develop self-confidence, raise their aspiration, speak themselves and can contribute in creative things to the community.

They might also work in team with other youth workers and other organizations to address the

Ensuring is about working in harmony with core values and principles because these are the systems which give a sense of meaning moral and social purpose to the ways in which the young people can use their skills and knowledge.

The ensuring approach is meant to assist youth in development works to

a. Maintain the principles of equity as the essential foundation of all youth activities, programmes and outcomes.

b. Develop an awareness and moral commitment to the ideals and in the tradition of the groups that founded it.

c. Secure the opportunity of redeveloping their learning their learning abilities.

d. Acquiring ways to making them into valuable and contributing members of the community.

e. Express their needs and ideas with power.

iii) Empowering: Putting the democratic principles into action with young people so that they can play an assertive and constructive part in the decision making that influence them at all levels of society.

This approach ensures that the young people

a. Understand deeply and internalize democratic principles and practices.

b. Have the insight and skills to influence the decisions that affect them and their communities.

c. Develop much more of their open-minded potentials as thinkers, interactions and doers.

d. Become involved creatively in social change.

e. Gain access to the resources

f. Play a full and active part in the social and economic development.

g. Organize self-sustaining initiatives.
