Keeping the person alive until better trained help arrives. It is called the A B C's Keep the Airways open, keep them Breathing, Control & treat for shock. Better trained help could be a First Responder, Fireman, EMT, Paramedic, Nurse, or Doctor or in the case at one school a Boy Scout with a first aid merit badge rendered aid until the school nurse got there.

The ABC's are Airway, Breathing, and Circulation.
