A managing director will usually be responsible for the commercial aspects and overall business policy of a newspaper. S/he will have little to do with the news part.
In the news part of a newspaper, there are the reporters/photographers, sub editors, and chief editor.
The advertising branch of the newspaper is where much of their money comes from.
And the production part of the enterprise is the actual press machinery and the paper distribution etc.
A managing director in a newspaper is responsible for overseeing the overall operations of the publication, including setting strategic direction, managing financial performance, and leading the editorial and business teams. They also play a key role in developing partnerships, driving innovation, and representing the newspaper in the wider community.
1. Maintain regular and timely delivery of newspapers to independent contractors (carriers).
2. Ensure correct number of papers are delivered to carriers, and if a carrier is short papers to deliver route then DM must acquire enough for carrier to finish route.
3. Answer any questions a carrier has about active customers, which paper they subscribe to (if you also deliver weeklies), run route lists for carrier to check against to ensure no one is getting a paper that shouldn't, handle bond issues, and act as a general go-between for the publisher and contractor.
4. Check daily delivery of new customers, customers restarting their service from vacation, and eliminate as much as possible any interruptions in service.
5. Maintain good customer AND carrier relations. This is actually the hardest part of the job as you'll spend a great deal of energy and time developing relationships and handling difficult personalities.
6. Maintain distribution drop center or drop point where papers are unloaded and distributed to carriers to deliver routes.
7. Periodically make new route tapes, throw lists, and maps of routes in case something comes up to prevent current carrier from delivering route and the DM needs to deliver it.
8. Enact any new company policies that the carriers must abide by.
9. Redeliver complaints to customers who missed their paper today by having it dispatched to you via radio or cell phone.
