Because the MA is a caregiver, working with patients under the auspices of a Provider (Healthcare Provider and Covered Entity under HIPAA), the MA is a CE/Provider, and is legally bound by HIPAA to provide standardized care and follow the protocol and stated procedures that the physician and all care staff have allocated.

In Optometry, an MA can not release any patient information without the written permission by the patient. The MA must convey that knowledge to the patient so they understand why their doctors office can not give out the patients prescription to any optical shop that calls. The patient must be given a copy of the HIPPA statement as well. Other then that, there is just the basic common sense standards to be practiced on site: no announcing personal info in front of the waiting room, don't leave out files that can be viewed by other patients, don't leave patient info on a computer screen and walk away, privately check insurance, etc. Patients might get frustrated with these laws, but for every one person that is unhappy, there are a hundred that appreciate it.
