If the computer still works, run a special program to erase and overwrite all the areas of the hard disks with zeros or another pattern. If the computer is no longer working, or there is insufficient time to perform the disk erasure, remove the hard disk or disks and dispose of them separately. If the computer contains solid-state storage devices for user data, such as Flash memory cards, it they should also be erased or removed prior to disposal of the machine.

Recycling of computers is tricky, because some state laws prohibit waste from electronics in landfills and some do not. Computer Monitors have a high concentration of lead of about 27%, and is considered hazardous by most standards. Therefore some states do not allow computer waste disposal in their landfills or have complicated and strict guidelines on the disposal of hazardous materials. There are some alternatives that are quick and easy to do to get rid of waste.

First, and foremost, before you get rid of your computer you need to delete sensitive materials from your hard drive by law. Information such as checking account numbers and even passwords are considered sensitive. To do this, you need to reformat your hard drive to completely wipe it clean. Just deleting it to the recycle bin will not work. Hackers, or someone that receives your computer as a trade in, will still have access to your information. Once you have taken care of your hard drive, here are some options for computer waste disposal.

Re-using and Donations

Because computers are hard to keep up with and become obsolete fast, you can donate them to organizations that may not be able to afford their upgrades. You or your organization can receive a tax credit for donating your computer and you can help an organization in need of new computers. You can also donate your computer to an auction site, to be auctioned off.

Trade Ins

Major companies (Dell, Hewlett Packard, Best Buy, Office Depot, etc) accept old computers in good condition for trade-ins. You can take your old computer to one of the stores that honor this policy and they will add value to the purchase of a newer computer. They have regulations that they have to follow in order to dispose of them correctly so that they do not get fined by the state EPA.

Disposing of computer waste can be easy if you follow these guidelines. If your organization has an inventory of computers, make sure you update the inventory of the computers you may have going to waste.

First you should see if you can sell it's parts online because computer parts are worth money in good condition. If not, it is fine to toss it in the trash as is.
