An element is a particle that contains only one type of atom.

Also, that atom contains a certain amount of protons for it to be that atom (eg Carbon can only contain 6 protons or it would be another element).

In physics, an element is a substance that contains the same number of protons in each of it's nuclei. For example, Boron atoms have 5 protons in their nucleus whilst potassium atoms have 20.
