Yogurt is not a living organism, and hence has no scientific name (a genus and species). However, yogurt is made by allowing bacteria to ferment. Different yogurts are made with different species of bacteria. You may have seen commercials for some yogurts with 'L. cassesi' and others. The "L" is an abbreviation for the genus name, and it yogurt one of the main ingredients always comes from the Lactobaccilus genus. Lactobaccilus create lactic acid (hence the Lacto- prefix), making yogurt slightly acidic. That's why you should always mix your yogurt, because the top layer may be the slightly less dense layer of lactic acid, ew!
