There is no simple, neat recipe that I can give you for good writing, especially as you say nothing about the kind(s) of writing you want to know about. However, it is worth making these general points: 1. Writing must be stylistically appropriate. To give an obvious example, you shouldn't write a paper for a scholarly journal in a colloquial style or in sentences consisting of just one clause. Conversely, if you write to friend or member of your family in a formal style you may sound cold and give offence. 2. When writing you should always have a hypothetical audience in mind. You need to make appropriate assumptions about the reader(s). This applies as much to creative writing as to matter-of-fact reports. Don't bewilder readers by assuming they have more knowledge than is likely to be the case, and don't insult them by assuming they are very ignorant. To put the matter differently: everything you write (except a diary) should be reader-friendly. Especially in creative writing you need to gain the readers' sympathy (though you may sometimes choose to shock or briefly annoy them). Writers are to a large extent in the business of 'winning friends and influencing people.' 3. Writing well is an art and requires practice. Even those with a talent for writing need to develop their abilties and skills over a period of time.
