I have a terrible cough right now. I found some cough syrup in the back of the medicine cabinet labeled "acetominophen and codeine phosphate elixir". The date on the prescription bottle is May 19, 2004. (That's almost nine years ago.) It's working just fine... at least I am falling asleep and staying asleep - not being wakened up by that stupid hacking cough - so it must be okay...
Am I stupid to to do that? You bet! I would never recommend anyone else take medication that's been sitting in their medicine cabinet for 8 years plus. But in this case, and because it's "me", I'm really glad I never got around to throwing it out. Because it's really helping...
Usually the shelf life of most pills are a year. Anything after that they pretty much loose their effect.
to increase shelf life
Pure codeine base is not very soluble in water, and has a short shelf life. When codeine base is mixed with a dilute strong acid, such as Sulfuric Acid, it forms a salt: Codeine sulfate. This salted version is more water soluble and has a longer shelf life. Most medicines are salted in this manner.
Benzonatate is a cough suppressant. The shelf life of benzonatate expires within one or two years in which the drug begins efficiency and shelf life.
3 to 6 months
Tylenol with codeine is a form of medication that is used for pain relief and to reduce fever. The shelf life of Tylenol with codeine will depend upon the conditions in which it was stored and the printed expiration date on the outside packaging.
Pure codeine base is not very soluble in water, and it doesn't have a very long shelf-life. Such chemicals are often salted with a dilute strong acid to make them more water soluble and increase their stability. So Codeine Sulphate is Codeine base plus a little bit of sulphuric acid.
Not long around dope-heads.. I would guess about 20 seconds!
Yes, DNA does have a shelf life. It has a shelf life of about four years if it is properly preserved.
If you are concerned about your cough, call your doctor's office or insurance advice nurse to discuss your symptoms and see if they want you to set up an appointment. If it is a minor, but bothersome, cough associated with a cold or flu, go to your pharmacy. There is a wide variety of cough syrups sold over-the-counter that are formulated to treat different types of coughs and other symptoms. Your pharmacist can help you find the right one for you. There are certain people who seek a prescription for cough syrup because if they take more than a prescription dose the ingredients give them a "high." This can cause headaches, nausea, and if overdone, serious complications. Please do not use cough syrup for entertainment, or as a way to escape from the stresses of life. If you are tempted to give in to peer pressure please talk to your school counselor or nurse; or even better, your parents. If you are using cough syrup as an escape, please talk to a friend, family member, therapist, or spiritual adviser. [Note: I am not a medical doctor or pharmacist.]
