There is nothing specifically religious about the Mediterranean Sea apart from the fact the Holy Land or Palestine coast is on it.Mediterranean is in fact the world's largest inland sea with an area of 2,516,000 square kilometre. "Mediterranean" means middle of land. Its ancient name was mediterraneum or mare internum because apart from the very small gap at the Gibraltar Straits through which ships enter it eastbound from the Atlantic Ocean, it is virtually surrounded by land from the north, south, east and west. The only other way into the Mediterranean from the Indian ocean today being by ships passing through the Suez Canal after passage up the Red Sea.
