What is the significance of 601 in The Andromeda Strain?

This is probably an interesting reference to a passage in the Bible. Since the message is assumed to be a generic memory overload output message, the scientists, notably Dr. Stone, dismiss the result of the growth model as a computer anomaly. However, as the movie ends, the viewers are shown the growth simulation model again, at greater magnification than had been previously seen. It results in the same output message, "601".

If we look at either Genesis Chapter Six, or Revelations Chapter Six, we get passages that speak very clearly about an apocalyptic type scenario arising from the evil that humans have cultivated within themselves. I encourage you to check out those particular Bible passages and post feedback as to whether you agree and/or disagree.

I believe it relates to the 1202 alarm that occurred when Apollo 11 was descending to the lunar surface. Divide 1202 by 2 and see what you get.

When I worked on VAX (DEC) machines back in the 80s, I happened to be looking at the list of error codes.

I found it interesting that the 601st error code means 'overload' or 'overflow'.
