Passover is meant to make us remember that we were spared from the tenth plague in Egypt, the death of the first-born sons. The angel of death "passed over" the houses that were marked with the blood of the lamb, and we use Pesach to remind us to thank God for his mercy.

The name Passover/Pesakh (פסח in Hebrew) commemorates the tenth and final plague brought upon the Egyptians, upon which an Egyptian king only identified in the Hebrew Bible as "Pharaoh" agreed to let the Israelite slaves leave Egypt with Moses.

The tenth plague is called Makkat haBekhorim (מכת הבכורים) in Hebrew; this phrase translates as "the Smiting of the Firstborn." Essentially, God decided to punish the Egyptians by sending the Angel of Death (מלאך המוות/Mal'akh haMavet) to kill all the Egyptian firstborns.

In order to be distinguished in the eyes of the Angel of Death from the Egyptians, God commanded the Israelites to sacrifice a lamb (the Paschal Lamb), allegedly a god of the Egyptians, and use its blood to smear on the doorpost. When the Angel of Death "saw" this sign, it would "pass over" the Israelite households, sparing the children within.

Hence "Passover" is a translation of the Hebrew verb פסח (pasakh, "to pass over," from the same root as Pesakh/פסח); the holiday is called that because it thanks God for "passing over" the Israelites and sparing their firstborn children.

Really, though, this event is just one of very many that is remembered and celebrated on Passover. Passover is about giving thanks to God for rescuing the Israelites/Jewish people from slavery in Egypt and promising to lead them to a land of their own in the Land of Israel.

Passover is when the Jews were released from slavery in Egypt. The last plague G-d applied to Egypt was to have the angel of death to take the first born son of every family.

The Jews were instructed to smear lamb's blood over their doorway so the Angel of Death would pass over their home.

The word 'seder' means 'order' and refers to the religious service held inside the home the first night of Passover in Israel and the first two nights of Passover outside of Israel. The significance of the seder is that it it fulfilling a commandment set by HaShem (The Creator) telling Jews that they must retell the story of the Exodus every year during the holiday of Passover. During the seder, the story of the Exodus is read, symbolic food is eaten as part of the ceremony, prayers are recited, and a large meal is eaten.

Was Jesus killed on Christmas or Easter?

There is conflicting evidence in the New Testament with regard to the death of Jesus. The synoptic Gospels imply that it was after the Passover, while the Gospel of John says he was crucified just prior to the Passover and gave up his spirit approximately at the time the Passover was to be slaughtered. Therefore we can conclude that while the Gospels may disagree on an exact time for Jesus' death, it is reasonably discernible that the purpose of the Gospel writers was to emphasize the significance of Passover observance. For it is their mention of the feast where they ultimately find common ground. ----
