Why is the settinng of the Hunger Games important?

The opening scene informs the reader about Katniss, her love for Prim, her mother and of course Gale. It also lets us know about the Hunger Games - what it is and why people loath it. It's just a scene that gets you started in on the book, informing you about the characters and The Hunger Games, itself.

The Hunger Games is set in a place once called North America, which would indicate that it is in the future. People often perceive the future to be very technologically advanced. The Hunger Games is set in the future because that makes it easier to believe that hovercrafts and force fields really exist in this world. But it also shows irony in the setting because it is almost hard to believe that people could possible be poor in the future like Katniss when other people such as the citizens in the Capital are so rich and do nothing to help the poor.
