A simple subject of a sentence is who is performing the action of the verb without any words that might be modifying the subject.

Examples:

Martha rides her bike to work every day. Martha is the simple subject.

The young, energetic dog chases the ball. Dog is the simple subject; the complete subject is the young, energetic dog (the complete subject includes all words that modify the subject).

Here is example, Justin is a name, Justin is the simple subject it is just a one word subject with no modifiers.
The subject is the person or thing doing the action (verb).

John ate the cake, John is the subject, John did the action.
The simple subject of a sentence is the noun which names the person, place, thing, idea, or quality of which the main verb is speaking.

Every sentence has a main verb, or predicate, and a simple subject. The main verb tells us what the essential action is.

For example: You asked a question.

In this sentece, 'asked' tells us what the action is. It is the verb. As a verb, it speaks about a noun. In this sentece, the verb 'asked' speaks of the noun 'you'. 'You' are the one who did the action of asking. 'You' is the simple subject; it is the noun which names the person that the verb is speaking about. In every sentence with an active verb, the action of the verb is done by the simple subject.

Other sentences have passive verbs. In these sentences, the action is done to the subject by another party.

For example: The question is answered by me.

The verb is 'is answered', for these two words tells us the action. As a verb, these two words speak of a noun. The verb is telling us about the question. The simple subject of the sentence, then, is 'question'. 'Question' is the noun that names the thing that the verb is talking about. The action of the verb is done 'by me', but the verb is not speaking about 'me'. It is speaking about the question, so 'question' is the subject.

The quality that distinguished simple subjects from other subjects is that simple subjets are simple.

For example: The faraway hills of the lonely land where my Grandmother once lived are now covered in soft sweet snow.

In this long sentece, the subject is 'The faraway hills of the lonely land where my Grandmother once lived'. But if we take away all the extra information and details, we come to be the basic, simple subject: hills.

Therefore, Simple Subjects are the subjects of sentences, bare of all extra elaboration.

The simple way to find a subject is to ask 'what is happening' (this will give you the verb) and then 'who is doing it' (the subject).

The boy stood on the burning deck ... (someone is standing, the boy);

In seventeen years here I never imagined ... (someone is imagining, I);

Now is the winter of our discontent

Made glorious summer by this son of York. (something is being made into summer, the winter of our discontent) - yes, this was a hard one. But the game is the same.
