"Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band/With a Little Help From My Friends" was released as a single in 1978, not long after the debut of a "Sgt. Pepper's" movie musical starring the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton. The B-side of the single was "A Day in the Life."
In 1966, the Beatles stopped touring because their music was getting more complex, with more tracks and effects, so it was hard for them to perform songs live. They also just wanted more time in the studio.
The Beatles had every intention of including those tracks on Sgt. Pepper's. Along with "When I'm 64," they were the first three tracks recorded. However, since the album took so long to complete, EMI/Parlophone Records wanted a new single released to meet public demand. The decision was made to release both tracks as a double A-side single. The Beatles and George Martin had a personal policy of not wanting to release albums that contained pre-released singles. They considered it a rip-off to expect record buyers to buy songs they already purchased as singles, especially in the UK where teens did not have the same buying power as American teens.

While active, they released 13 albums in the UK: Please Please Me, With the Beatles, A Hard Day's Night, Beatles for Sale, Help!, Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Magical Mystery Tour, The Beatles (White Album), Yellow Submarine, Abbey Road and Let it Be. Internationally, the licenced distributors in other countries would mix and match the tracks to make different albums with new names, and after 1970 countless compilation and bootleg albums were later released.
