If you have gotten a DUI in Minnesota, there is no statute of limitations that applies. Due process has occurred and the penalty assessed. It is a part of the criminal record and does not go away.

There is no statute of limitation for tax evasion.

But it is true that tax does have legal limits on how long they have to audit (review) and how long have to assess any additional tax. Many things effect how the time is counted - like when it starts or if a day or period counts (holidays, etc. and many other things "toll the bell"). Like if they ever tried to contact you (even if you didn't receive it) the bell is tolled until you respond, at least. (Ignoring them and figuring you'll run past the SOL) will not work. Things like how much additional you may owe,as percent of how much you paid, can also enter into how long the statute is. Simply not a question with a set answer....but frankly, for the average guy who does his normal best to file, it runs pretty quick - like 3 years (as a generality).

BUT, VIRTUALLY ALL TAXES HAVE THE SAME SIMPLE PROVISION - THE TIME TO START THE CLOCK FOR THE RUNNING OF THE STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS DOES NOT START UNTIL AN ESSENTIALLY COMPLETE RETURN IS FILED. Do not file and you remain perpetually open for audit and assessment for those years...so if they catch you say in year 15, you can be fairly well assured they're going to assess, with penalties and interest all previous periods. Of course criminal charges would also be likely.
