The Mayan calendar ends in 2012. Since the Mayan civilization was destroyed centuries ago by the Spanish Conquistadores, we have no way of finding out why their calendar does not extend past that year. Some people have speculated that the Mayans had some way of knowing that the world would end in 2012, but this is a very odd speculation, since those same Mayans were completely unable to predict what the Spanish were going to do to them. This does not speak well of their ability to forsee future events. So I wouldn't take such predictions seriously. It is very unlikely that the world will end in 2012.
