The Chinese have a different way of making astrological predictions and do not use the Sun Signs or Zodiac signs as in traditional Astrology. The art of Chinese Astrology is instead based on the 12 animal years and the Five Elements. Chinese astrology is mainly dependent on the order of the 12 animal years, much like the 12 Zodiac signs. As evident by Chinese legends, Lord Buddha himself realized the need for changing the Chinese nation and thus called a meeting of the entire animal kingdom to this effect. This meeting was called on the day of Chinese New Year, which does not fall on the same day each year, but anywhere from mid- January to mid-February. In spite of calling the entire animal kingdom, only 12 animals actually turned up for the meeting. These were, the rat, the ox, the tiger, the cat, the dragon, the snake, the horse, the goat, the monkey, the rooster, the dog, and the pig; in that order. To honor these 12 animals for their attendance, Lord Buddha gave each animal their own year, and also the people born in the same animal year with their individual characteristics and personalities. Thus, the 12 animal years make the starting point of Chinese Astrology. But, in the same manner that a persons astrological profile cannot be determined by their Sun Sign alone, in traditional astrology; in Chinese Astrology too, it cannot be determined only by the animal year in which a person was born. The next step is to differentiate each person born under the same animal year, and this is done through the Five Elements. Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water, are the Five Elements that are read in addition to a persons animal year, and thus each unique astrological profile is made for every person, based on the techniques of Chinese Astrology.

That is a good beginning. Here are some lessor known facts added by gypsystop.com: There are countless fortune telling methods in China. The New Year starts on the second new moon after the winter solstice. Usually in February. They follow the lunar calendar which is 13 months long and each month is marked by the new moon. There are many variations and styles of astrology in the east based on geography and the time period. It is not true astrology in the strictest sense. Chinese astrology is based on the Chinese calendar. The Chinese calendar is based on astronomy, numerology and ancient philosophy. The Chinese calendar is a lunisolar calendar combining both the path of the sun and the moon. Originally the 5 planets (elements), the moon and the sun made up the "7 stars". Each of the 7 stars resided in the 4 seasons or directions and made up the "28 lunar mansions". Lunar mansions became very popular in Arabic astrology and in Indian astrology. In Indian astrology they call them the 28 nakshastras. These also make up 28 specific constellations with very detailed stories, legends and omens attached to them. Two other forms of astrology came later: The "Purple Emperor" based on the lunar calendar and the "4 pillars of destiny" based on the solar calendar. Chinese astrology uses a 60 year cycle. It's each of the 5 elements (planets) paired up with each of the 12 zodiac animals in the sky. All of these combine to make the "12 earthly branches". Everything is also assigned a Yin or Yang value. The "10 heavenly stems" come from the Yin and the Yang of each of the 5 elements. If the year ends in an even number the heavenly body is Yang. Odd is Yin. The 4 pillars of destiny reports combine the 10 heavenly stems with the 12 earthly branches. The Lunar Purple Emperor reports combine the "12 palaces" with up to 144 constellations to come up with different life aspects.

Their animal astrology is based on astronomy. The Chinese base the 12 animal system off of Jupiter's Orbit. Jupiter is the planet of destiny and is very different from any planet in our system. We are very lucky to only have one Jupiter and that it is so calm. Jupiters are, in almost every solar system we study, whacking other planets into the sun like marbles on a whim, making it hard for them to live for very long and develop life like our planet has. each person is assigned 4 of the 12 animals. Hour, day, month and year. We all have a power animal or year animal, which is the most popular in the west. We all have an inner animal that is based on our month of birth which influences our motivation, love life, compatibility and inner dialogue. Our day animal influences daily activity. And finally, we all have a secret animal based on our time of birth. This last one is considered to be the most powerful influence over who we are.

It was origonally used as a calander. There were twelve years cycle on the calandar, and it was called the Lunar Calandar. To represent the Lunar calander, 12 animals were placed under each year. In order from the first year of the cycle to the last the animals are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Ram, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Boar. There is also a legend to go along with the zodiac, which you can easily find by lookign up "zodiac legend". The Japanese and Chinese zodiac legends are slightly differant, but the Chinese one is more known.

There are many stories about the Chinese zodiac but my favorite would have to be this one.....

So once upon a time god was very bored so he invited some animals from earth to a party that he was going to have in the sky. He invited The rat,ox,tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, ram, monkey, roster,Dog,Boar, and cat.

The Rat wanted to play a trick on the cat so he told him the party was going to be the day after today.

So while all the other animals went to the party the cat slept in.

And the Rat road on the ox's back the whole way.

The End

we just have horoscope animals.

12 in all:

Rat - It is the first sign of the Chinese zodiac; so, it fittingly represents (initiating) action. Depending on you to get things moving. There is constant mental activity with you. Even when you appear to be resting, your mind is working full speed. Most often you are devising a scheme to earn the most money with the least amount of work.

Ox - The Ox sign, first and foremost, is the most dependable of all the Chinese zodiac signs. The Ox person will instinctively shoulder the load in any of their relationships whether it be for love, family or friends. Most people would think that this is an unfair burden to bear, however, the Ox gets enjoyment and statisfaction out of the weight it bears.

Tiger - The adventurous and courageous Tiger is a born leader. You are not afraid to blaze new trails, and, given your independent streak, you're more than willing to go it alone if necessary. Your firm determination also makes you a fierce competitor.

Rabbit - Above all else the Rabbit is a peacemaker. You no doubt have excellent diplomatic skills and, while you don't like conflict, you are the first person your friends turn to when it's necessary to make peace among them. Your sense of calm and your modest, unassuming presence is just what's needed to smooth all those ruffled feathers. You are also valued for your kindness. You are sensitive to the needs of people around you and thoughtfully do little things to make them happy. Your kindness extends to animals, and it is especially there where we see your gentle heart. You are a soft touch for almost every litter critter. You likely have exquisite taste in both dress and the arts. Suave and style conscious you want to wear the latest fashions and are always appropriately dressed for the occasion. If you are not an artist yourself, you have an excellent appreciation of the arts and can be a good critic.

Dragon - Above all else the Dragon is a visionary with grandiose goals. You tend to boldly confront the mightiest obstacles and accept challenges that seem beyond the reach of others. You are not only decisive but, having made a decision, tenaciously hold onto the idea, moving heaven and earth if necessary, to fulfill your dreams. You are often flamboyant and even occasionally come across as strikingly or mysteriously different or unusual. This can be caused in part by your stylish dress and, or, your high energy level. You may also have natural leadership ability along with this talent for attracting attention. You take pride in yourself and your confidence. It is unlikely people will say you lack self-confidence.

Snake - Depth and charisma make the Snake a formidable presence. You tend to spend a lot of time in your head, but you are not a worrier. Rather, you pass your quiet time in reflection and contemplation. This, together with your love of learning, is what gives you such great depth. Of all the signs of the Chinese zodiac, yours is most closely associated with wisdom. You probably have many interests and an insatiable thirst for knowledge, which result in an increasingly complex persona. In fact there is always more to learn about you. Just when people think they know you, they find out you have developed a totally new interest. Not only that they discover you have quickly grasped the subject

Horse - Popular literature in the West speaks of "men being from Mars and women being from Venus." Well, in Chinese astrology, the Horse is associated with male and its complementary sign, the Sheep, with female characteristics. Independence is the "male" characteristic epitomized by the Horse. Anyone who loves cowboy movies knows the first thing a cowboy does upon riding into town is to tie up his Horse. You are most likely adventurous, fun loving and enjoy the outdoors as well as a variety of sports. It's no chore to get you to go to the fitness center to work out, but you truly enjoy the combination of working out and being outdoors---hiking, jogging, biking, rock wall climbing.

Sheep - Of all the signs, the Sheep symbolizes altruism and the female persona. You tend to be a gentle hearted person. What aggressiveness you have is likely to manifest as passive-aggressive behavior. You probably have a big soft spot for your little children and animals. You are likely to be fashionable and refined, preferring quiet, charming social settings such as a cozy little restaurant or an art museum. Speaking of art, there is a good chance you are an artist yourself, and an even better one that you appreciate the aesthetics of more than one of the performing and, or, visual arts. Finally, it must be said you are a romantic type. In addition to a propensity for dinner by candlelight, you also long for the pastoral. You like to spend time walking in the garden or driving through the peaceful countryside. And, you probably adore all the squirrels and other cute little animals you find along the way.

Monkey - The Monkey symbolizes fun and versatility. You are likely to be unpredictable, witty, and charming, engineered to make the rest of us happy. You also have the potential to be competent, if not expert, at many and varied tasks. You also have a serious side and can be a formidable competitor in business or on the athletic field. Underneath your playful exterior is a real competitive streak and loads of self-confidence. You also are good at adapting to change or changing situations.

Rooster - The candid Rooster will tell you what's on their mind. When you speak, you give a frank and honest report. Furthermore, it will be easily understood because of the acute expressiveness of both your words and your non-verbal communication. You probably have a wry sense of humor, meaning it has a clever and often ironically or grimly humorous quality about it. It's likely you are great at doing projects thanks to your outstanding organizational skills. You tend to go about your work in the most efficient manner, aided by your keen eye for detail. At work or play enthusiasm characterizes your attitude, and it's infectious.

Dog - Of all the signs the Dog symbolizes honor and justice. The honorable Dog is the sign most likely to speak out about wrongs in the world and to call for justice. You have a strong sense of fair play and are usually forthright and outspoken. This makes you the perfect spokesperson for those who can't or won't speak up for themselves. You are most likely a valued member of your family as well as your community. You tend to be very protective of family members and are likely to enjoy celebrating your country's Independence Day with your family. Loyalty and patriotism are near and dear to your heart. You respect the flag and are moved in your heart when the national anthem is played at a sporting event. Although you are outspoken, you are not one to rail against your country, and you are discreet and can be trusted to hold what we tell you in confidence.

Boar - The Pig, the last sign of the Chinese zodiac, is clear evidence of the old saying, "nice guys finish last." You are honest, good hearted and present a kindly face to friends and strangers alike. Your affection is genuine, and your love has no bounds. You are usually very chivalrous. Courtesy and generosity are a way of life with you.
