The parable has nothing to do with religion.

The parable was told as a rebuke to the scribes and Pharisees of Jesus' time. Jesus came to call the nation of Israel to repent but the scribes and Pharisees thought Jesus should be talking with them the "spiritual leaders" not the common people.

The father in the parable represents God and shows His desire for Israel to repent and turn to Him.

People often use this parable to illustrate how God is waiting for people to repent and turn to Him. But this not the primary interpretation.

The story seems to focus on the son who leaves home and squanders all his inheritance and comes to his senses and returns home to ask his father to forgive him. It also shows the father waiting to receive his son with open arms. However, the main point is directed at his older brother who stayed home and did what his father said but yet he felt cheated out of love and attention. The Father tells him that all he had to do was Ask and the father would bless him.

Forgiveness

Love of Father/God

Prayer

God is a provider

We receive a spiritual inheritance when we become God's children.

//Jesus used parables when He wanted to make a particular point. The father in the story is like the Heavenly Father, He dearly loves the good son who obeyed and did not stray, who was with Him all the time. God loves those of His earthly children that are loyal and obedient to him. But the joy He feels when a straying child finally comes home, back into the fold, makes Him incrediably joyful. He doesn't love one better than the other, He just has great happiness and forgiveness to the prodigal son, or us as Christians when we repent and sin no more. Knowing we are saved from hell is a great reason to 'kill the fatted calf' and celebrate.

Answer:

In the parable the father represents God, the youngest son represents Israel and the oldest son represents the scribes and Pharisees.

The youngest son leaves his father - Israel at this stage is far from the relationship that God intended them to have with Him.

Jesus is calling Israel back to the relationship God intended for them. (Jesus is not talking about Christians or how to be a Christian because to be a Christian was only possible after His death and resurrection.)

The oldest son is prejudiced towards the youngest son because the youngest son is treated well, given a lot of attention etc by the father.

In the gospels we can see Jesus paid a lot of attention to the ordinary people the scribes and Pharisees of the day were jealous because they thought they were the spiritual men of Israel. They were put out that Jesus "received sinners" they thought Jesus should have been spending time with them - they were the spiritual ones.

This is the direct interpretation of the parable but also we can see that the father was waiting for the youngest son to return and so God waits for people to repent and turn to Him.

The parable of the Prodigal Son can be found at Luke 15:11-32 and It teaches us HOW to forgive eachother, by showing that God is always ready to forgive us, if we are truly repentant and have changed our bad ways. (Isa 55:7) God's forgiveness is not prompted by sentimentality, and he will not hold back punishment for those who truly need it. (Psalm 99:8); ( for instance, Joshua warned Israel that God would not forgive apostasy on their part.-Josiah 24:19, 20; compare Isaiah 2:6-9.)

God has clearly laid out what he expects from those who are seeking and receiving his forgiveness, by using parables like these. To receive forgiveness, we must :

*Acknowledge our sin,

*Recognize that it is an offense against God,

*Confess it completely and truthfully to God,

*have a Deep heartfelt sorrow for the wrong done,

*be determined to turn AWAY from the bad practice. (Psalm 32:5; 51:4; 1John 1:8, 9; 2Corinthians 7:8-11)

*Do what he can to right the wrong or damage done. (Matthew 5:23, 24) and

*pray to God, asking for forgiveness on the basis of Christ's ransom sacrifice.-

Ephesians 1:7

Jesus gave another example of someone who did NOT forgive his brother, and we get a pretty complete picture of how God looks at forgiveness. (Matthew 18:23-35)
