Sodium Chloride forms an ionic network made up of ionic bonds i.e. the chlorine takes the sodium's valence electron so that both have a complete octet of electrons (8 electrons in the outer most shell), Chlorine's high electronegativity means that this is a fairly strong bond accounting for its high boiling point if 1413 degrees Celsius, also it is polar meaning it dissolves in water. Sodium Chloride is commonly refereed to as table salt. It has a molar mass of 58.443g.

The chemical formula is NaCl. It is a linear molecule, with a single ionic bond between the Sodium and Chlorine. Because of the electronegativity difference between Sodium and Chlorine, NaCl is a polar molecule. It is also very soluble in water.

Conventially NaCl has a crysttaline lattice structure (if you take it in a plane ax+by+cz+d~0), with Cl ion surrounding the Na positive ion. On a larger scale NaCl comprises a 3-d structure, say cubicle in which Na ions are conventially taken at the corners of the cube. This structure is very stable and drastic conditions are required to break it down.

These are the ions and their charges: Na+1 Cl-1

The charges have to add up to zero, so one +1 sodium ion cancels out one -1 chlorine ion. Therefore, the chemical formula of sodium chloride is NaCl.
