Porphyria's lover strangles her to preserve the moment she died, meaning that Porphyria would be with the narrator forever. The actions of the narrator are unfolded through the recollection of the night she died. The beginning of the poem describes the scene, especially the weather. I like the line 'did its worst to vex the lake'. This uses the poetic style of personification, making it sound like as the lake is obviously waving wildly, that the bad weather is angering it.

A couple of lines later it describes Pophyria's movements, these are graceful and do not imply that she is in an urgency. The narrator makes Pophyria seem angelic. She glided in, and shut out the cold, her smooth white shoulder, implies that her skin was unblemished. The narrator says that when he strangles her she felt no pain, this could mean that she wanted him to kill her, so they could both stay in love, or because she was an angel so she felt no pain anyway.

In line 15, the narrator says, 'When no voice replied' instead of 'I didn't reply', this makes it seem that the narrator is an outsider, rather than in the cottage.

Throughout the poem, the narrator has been very still and motionless, letting Porphyria move him and adjust where his limbs are, but in line 31, he describes looking at her eyes himself.

When the narrator, he opens her eyes, and uses the strange metaphor of, opening a flower bud that might enclose a bee. Also when the narrator says that he blue eyes were laughing, this may justify why he killed her, so both of them are locked in the moment forever.

In line 58 the narrator begins using present tense, instead of past tense, making it seem as though the narrator was writing it there and then making a recollection of the key events that happened that night.

The main theme in the poem was love and the strong bond between the narrator and Porphyria. It displays the other emotions that come with love such as pride, joy, fear and obsession.
