It was Christmas Eve when three Americans (their enemy) knocked in the cottage of a mother and her son. The mother took them in and healed Harry- the wounded one, and cooked ('Hermman'&potatoes) for them (Jim, Robin, Harry). Just as they were setting the table, there came another knock. The son was familiar of the uniforms the men were wearing, they were Germans (German corporal, Heinz, Willi) who was lost and will stay then continue their trip at daylight. The mother will take them in and will be served with a hot meal with a one condition, and that is to not kill each other inside. She ordered everyone to hand out their weapons. While the son was helping to cook more potatoes, a German inspected the wounded soldier when he heard Harry moan. They were all relaxed after their meal.Just before midnight, they all stood up looking to the star of Bethlehem except for Harry who was sleeping. It was as if they had all forgotten about the war.At daylight, they had oatmeal, while Harry swallowed broth and drank an invigorating drink from the corporal's wine, sugar and an egg. The Americans and Germans were figuring their way out the forest and to their lines. The mother gave them all back their weapons and wished them good luck and said God bless. The Americans and the Germans shook their hands then went to their opposite ways. The mother brought out their old family bible which was open to the Christmas story, the Birth in the Manger and how the Wise Men came from afar bearing their gifts. Her finger was tracing the last line from Matthew 2:12: "...they departed into their own country another way."I know it is quite incorrect... But that is all I can be a help for ya'll :3Characters of the story plays a great role that happened in the war between Germany and Americans. These characters affected the situation in which the mother let the Americans to stay in their home, knowing that they are called to be their enemies. Shson took the risk and helped them. The son who was fritz is the company of her mother that also agreed and helped by getting potatoes for the soldiers to eat. The American soldiers who stayed in the house just wanted a place to get some rest for they are lost, starving , and one of their company was wounded. The highest point in the characters is when the German soldiers knocked and the mother also let them in for they are both in the same situation so as the Americans. They are in a opposite groups that might kill each other and hurt the innocent ones. Each of these characters contributed to the scene that showed there was a war and yet they celebrated Christmas eve with peace and unity to both sides. The atmosphere and place of the event that happened had a big help on curing the wounded soldier. As it was said, it was Christmas eve that automatically portray a weather that is cold. Fritz and also his mother was sent in the woods.

The text of the story can be found here: http://storytruceintheforest.blogspot.com/

Basically, it is a story of people being merciful and kind and voluntarily disarming and choosing brotherhood and peace rather than war for Christmas.

The setting is a cottage near the German/Belgian border. Three lost American soldiers, one seriously wounded, knock on the door of a cottage. Despite the fact that they are "the enemy," the woman lets them in, tends the wounded man, and starts preparing dinner for them.

As they were preparing dinner, there is another knock, but this time it is German soldiers. They ask if they can stay. The woman knows that there is a law against harboring the enemy, and that not only could her American guests be shot, but so could her and her son. Despite this, she welcomes the German soldiers in, but tells them that they need to leave their weapons, and says "this Christmas night, let us forget about killing."

The Germans and the Americans are uncomfortable at first, but they eat together and then start helping each other a little. A German examines the American's wound, and they help them know how to get back to the American lines.

They shook hands and each went their separate ways back to their sides of the war, but for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day there was peace between them, and the story suggests that we should be willing to have that sort of brotherhood all the time, because that is what the idea of Christmas and Christ is about.
