Piggy is significant in the novel because he is one of the central characters. In addition, he symbolizes intelligence because he takes up responsibility and he gives Ralph advice. Piggy is also a Promethean figure---his intelligence leads him to be the voice of sanity and individual rights. Piggy also stands for good sense, for responsibility and thinking ahead.

The significance of the body is that it would have reminded the boys that the universe did not stop at the boundaries of the island. It would have reminded them that there was a whole world filled with civilised people. They might have been encouraged to continue their efforts to get rescued and this would have reinforced Ralph's authority. Instead when the message of the body was 'read' in the dim light of dawn by Samneric who misread it and thought it proof of the existence of the beast. When their sighting was recounted to the rest of the boys it added fuel to the superstitions which were running rife. The attentions of the boys were turned inwards on their own little universe, within the boundaries of the island. This undermined the importantance of Ralph's insistence in keeping the fire lit. The boys had little faith in any possible rescue by people from outside the island, when they had simply forgotten that the rest of the world even existed.

The arrival of the parachutist in chapter 6 is the message from the world of adults which Ralph had hoped for in the previous chapter. If the boys had seen him clearly they would have been reminded that there was a whole world beyond the boundaries of their island and they might have been encouraged in their efforts to try and get rescued. Ralph's position as leader would have been enhanced and his efforts to improve their lives might have gained more support. Unfortunately the parachutist was mistaken for the beast, which turned the attention of the boys inwards towards the affairs of the island. they forgot about the outside world and the need to be rescued, which undermined Ralph's position as leader. This reinforced Jack's attempts at gaining power to the detriment of them all.

The pilot is dead in the book to basically scare the children. Its the next step to make them believe there is actually a beast and that's why Jack goes crazy. Before the crash the pilot ejected himself from the plane but got caught in the trees and died. So no adults for these little boys.

It symbolizes the loss of logic and reason, and by then Ralph will be hunted down by Jack's tribe just because he isn't savage.
