Kim sits upon a cannon he meets the Lama. They go into the museum where an image of Simeon blessing the Christ child is seen (Christ said "you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free"). Then the Lama reveals he is in search of the "River of the arrow". Arrows are symbolic of straight and true or truth. The river is a flowing source or spring symbolic of life giving waters. Kipling is drawing a metaphor where the truth will set you free and you find forgiveness after an internal realization of "truth". The actual truth does not get addressed but it may be Kipling trying to suggest that Buddhism (not actually a belief in a God except yourself) or Atheism would not need a God's forgiveness but is something you obtain within yourself. However, the mention of Simeon (which is from Luke 2:27-32) would not entirely overlook the need for the forgiveness of sin from God. Kipling may be unsure with the need for forgiveness as is understood and has stated from other of his works (Plain tales from the Hills). The glasses given the Lama from the curator (who was Kipling's father in real life) is symbolic as to giving the Lama better vision in his search for his quest. The uncertainty shows the quest of the heart to know if we are forgiven by God and ourselves. Curiously enough, the ancient Hebrew word "yada" (to know) has in its original pictograph images as letters the hand (receiving), the door or heart, and a spring. That the word "to know" would be hands receiving life giving waters into the heart or from the heart of God. :)

The River of the Arrow in Rudyard Kipling's "Kim" represents the passage from one stage of life to another. It symbolizes transformation, spiritual growth, and rebirth as Kim undergoes a symbolic journey of self-discovery and enlightenment while crossing the river. The river also serves as a metaphor for the passage from childhood to adulthood, signifying Kim's transition into a more mature and enlightened individual.

What is the origin of family name Arrowood?

My name is Arnold R. Arrowood from Antigo,WI. I have read in the Arrowood geneology book from Washington D.C. that the surname Arrowood is derived in part from the river Arrow in England. In the ancient days the last name was given by occupation, place of residence (hence the words Arrow/woods) or from your line of heritage. Combined it comes from the fact that where we lived was by the river Arrow in the woods.
