The telephone country code for Italy is +39.

Mobile numbers in Italy begin with +39 6, but it is incorrect to refer to +396 as a country code. There are no separate mobile country codes. In some countries, mobile number ranges are easily distinguished from landlines, while in other countries mobile numbers are intermingled with landline numbers, but in all normal cases they use the same telephone country code.

(The plus sign means "insert your international access prefix here." From a GSM mobile phone, you can enter the number in full international format, starting with the plus sign. The most common prefix is 00, but North America (USA, Canada, etc.) uses 011, Japan uses 010, Australia uses 0011, and many other countries use different prefixes.)

Italy is country code +39. All numbers have ten digits after the country code.

Important: Italy is an exception to the rule that you drop the leading '0' of the national number when calling from abroad. For example, Rome is 06 within Italy, or +39 06 (not +39 6) in international format. All landline numbers in Italy begin with +39 0. Mobile numbers begin with +39 3.

Italy no longer has area codes, per se, since you must dial the entire number for all calls. However, numbers in Rome begin with 06, Venice with 041, and Parma with 0521.

Note that you do not drop the leading 0 of the Italian area code when dialing internationally. For example, Rome's 06 becomes +39 06, not +39 6.

The telephone country code for Italy is +39.

Note that Italy is an exception to the general rule that you drop the leading 0 of a domestic number when putting it in international format. All regular landline numbers in Italy begin with 0, and the 0 must be retained in international format. Mobile (cell phone) numbers in Italy begin with 3. Within Italy, you must dial the entire number, including the area code, for all calls. Some people mistakenly refer to country codes +390 and +393, but the correct country code is just +39.

There are far too many area codes to list all of them here. A few area codes of major cities:

+39 02 = Milan

+39 06 = Rome

+39 06 698 = Vatican City (assigned, but does not use, +379)

+39 041 = Venice

+39 050 = Pisa

+39 051 = Bologna

+39 055 = Florence

+39 081 = Naples

+39 091 = Palermo

+39 0549 = Rep. of San Marino (also uses +378 0549)

+39 3 = (mobile numbers)

(The plus sign means "insert your international access prefix here." From a GSM mobile phone, you can enter the number in full international format, starting with the plus sign. The most common prefix is 00, but North America (USA, Canada, etc.) uses 011, Japan uses 010, Australia uses 0011, and many other countries use different prefixes.)
