Your Medicare number is located on your red, white and blue Medicare card. It is usually a person's nine-digit social security number. That is why it is important to keep it secure. Sometimes the number is not a person's social security number. It will depend on how that person met eligibility for Medicare, but most often, it is a person's social security number.
The telephone number for the Medicare fraud hotline is 1-800-447-8477. One can also report fraud to Medicare another way by faxing the number 1-800-223-2164.

Medicare fraud is detected in many ways. Medicare has recently launched an anti-fraud detection system. It works like a credit card system and detects suspicious activity to help stop fraud or even someone from using a lost or stole card.
"The Office of Inspector General for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is the government program responsible for overseeing medicare fraud. Those convicted of Medicare fraud face stiff penalties including disbarment from Health and Human Services programs. In 2009, the Health Care Fraud Prevention and Enforcement Action Team (HEAT) was created to combat Medicare fraud."
There are many ways that medicare fraud can occur. If a doctor or doctors office bills for tests that were not completed, or preforms unnecessary procedures, they have committed medicare fraud. Also using cheap medical equipment, but billing for expensive equipment is also medical fraud.
