An isthmus is a narrow strip of land connecting two larger land masses. One example of an isthmus is the Madison Isthmus which is between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona.
A narrow section of land that connects to larger landmasses is referred to as a causeway. Sometimes roads are built on causeways, in order to span a body of water.
