The theme of "The Walrus and the Carpenter" is often interpreted as a cautionary tale about the deceptive nature of authority figures and the consequences of blindly following them. The poem raises questions about power dynamics, manipulation, and moral ambiguity, leaving readers to ponder the complexities of human behavior and relationships.

Carroll had a penchant for parodying popular children's poems, but unlike other poems in the Alice books, The Walrus and the Carpenter does not parody any poem in particular.

In a letter he wrote in 1872, Carroll said, "I had no particular poem in mind. The metre is a common one, and I don't think 'Eugene Aram' suggested it more than the many other poems I have read in the same metre." (Eugene Aram is a poem by Thomas Hood)

Like The Dream of Eugene Aram, The Walrus and the Carpenter is written in Ballad form, but whether it parodies or mocks this form or is simply utilising it is debatable.

Is a nonsense verse actually intended to be serious?

This is a personal opinion: Every verse including nonsense verse says something about the writer, and in that sense can be serious to some extent. Sometimes the verse itself may have a 'moral' or central theme that serves to instruct. Carroll's material in Through the Looking Glass are good examples. There are lessons in "The Walrus and the Carpenter", and even in "The Jabberwocky". But there is no requirement that the author must set out to be serious when writing nonsense verse.
