The main theme is that of growing up. The boy in the poem is looking negatively on the present and is all too eager to grow up. This is shown by the negative connotations such as the repetition of the word "not" indicating he looks upon the present negatively and is full of anticipation to be five years old which in his eyes is a big step towards maturity which he so craves.
