As of 5/25/2009, the closest ticker symbol you can get is "DAI" at the NYSE. "DAI" stands for "Daimler AG". It's not exactly Chrysler, but there is part of Chrysler in the picture. Let me explain...
Daimler AG was originally founded in 1883, and is headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany.
Then, upon buying Chrysler, for a few years "Daimler AG" was known as "DaimlerChrysler AG". At that time, their ticker symbol was "DCX" at the NYSE.
Then, in October 2007, "Daimler AG"...
A) Sold 80.1% of "Chrysler Holding LLC" to "Cerebus Capital Management",
B) Cerebus Capital took "Chrysler Holding LLC" private,
C) "DaimlerChrysler AG" changed its name back to "Daimler AG",
D) The "DCX" ticker was discontinued,
E) "DaimlerChrysler AG" ceased to exist. However...
F) "Daimler AG" retained a 19.9% stake in "Chrysler Holding LLC".
As of May 25, 2009, this means that...
1) 80.1% of "Chrysler Holding LLC" is not available for trading at any public stock exchange. However...
2) 19.9% of "Chrysler Holding LLC" is currently available indirectly. Should you decide to invest in "DAI", you will also invest in Chrysler, because "Daimler AG" still owns 19.9% of "Chrysler Holding LLC" which designs, manufactures, assembles and sells cars and trucks under the Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge names. 3) 35% of "Chrysler Holding LLC" will be available soon for investment. It will be through "Fiat", the Italian auto maker, a public corporation traded at the Milan stock exchange. The Fiat ticker is "F.MI". As you might recall, on Jan. 20, 2009, they agreed to buy a 35% stake in "Chrysler Holding LLC". However, considering the likely bankruptcy of Chrysler, and the mess the bankruptcy will create, currently there is a debate raging over whether the Chrysler merger with Fiat will be a success.
Note: The stock symbol was DCX.BA before all of the above occured
Cerberus Capital Management ultimately bought out 100% of Chrysler (Cerberus is a very diverse company, and owns, among other things, the Remington, Bushmaster, and DPMS firearms manufacturing companies). They turned around and gave Fiat of Italy a 20$ stake in Chrysler, and this may eventually be increased to 51%.
Chrysler LLC. Chrysler was bought by Cerberus Capital Management. They own 80.1% and Fiat owns 19.9%.
12-2013
Fiat now has 58.5% and the UAW has 41.5%
Fiat has now bought the UAW portion.
Chrysler is a privately held company. Therefore it has no ticker symbol. 80% of Chrysler Group LLC is held by Cerberus Capital Managment and 20% was aquired by Fiat when the 2009 bail outs happened. The CEO of Chrysler, Sergio Marchionne, is also the CEO of Fiat.
