Admiral of the Navy. However, there is no one currently serving at that rank in today's armed forces. Admiral of the Navy was a wartime rank last used in WWII.

The current 'Highest Ranking Officer' in the Navy is the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) with the rank of Admiral.

The highest ranking officer is held by an Admiral. His title is CNO,or the Chief of Naval Operations. He holds the insignia of four stars. There is an additional, higher, rank of five stars. He is called a Fleet Admiral. This rank, however, is awarded only during wartime and was awarded to only 4 men - all during WW II:

William D. Leahy (appointed 15 Dec 1944)

Ernest J. King (appointed 17 Dec 1944)

Chester W. Nimitz (appointed 19 Dec 1944)

William F. Halsey, Jr (appointed 11 Dec 1945)

Admiral Chester Nimitz, until his death, was the last surviving Fleet Admiral.

There are presently no five star admirals.

On the enlisted side, you will find the MCPO,or Master Chief Petty Officer. There is only one in the Navy, and he is the highest ranking enlisted man in the Navy.He is appointed from the ranks of Master Chiefs by the Chief of Naval Operations.

The Navy has a different rank structure for officers than the other branches. A Captain in the Navy is 06 - equivalent to Colonel. The rank of Colonel does not exist in the Navy.
