Treatment of a scorpion sting

* Pain at the site of the sting can sometimes be limited with an ice cube.

* Painkilling injections (morphine-based painkiller) may be required and a doctor should therefore be consulted. In the case of more marked symptoms, treatment must be given as for snake bites, and the patient must receive medical treatment as quickly as possible.

* There is antiserum for scorpion venom. Treatment must be overseen by a doctor.

First if you have a partner with you let him/her suck out the poison. It is not poisonous to taste but spit it out once it is sucked out. Then stop the blood flow. Tie down the defected limb with a clothe. Make sure it is tight. You probably shouldn't walk so it is recommended to be carried.

Now if you don't have a partner you can do with out the sucking just make sure you barely use the infected limb.

We use Western Mugwort, a plant that grows all over the western U.S. It can be used in tincture form or as a poultice, as well as internally.

My husband, an herbologist, has been stung 29 times by the centuroides scorpion (rock scorpions don't count). He has experimented with many different remedies and mugwort is his favorite. If you are out hiking and get stung, look around for a mugwort plant, chew up some of the leaves and hold them against the sting.

Wash the sting with soap and water and remove all jewelry because swelling of tissue may impede the circulation if it not allowed to expand (for example, a sting on a finger that has a ring surrounding it).

Apply cool compresses, usually 10 minutes on and ten minutes off of the site of the sting.

Acetaminophen (Tylenol) 1-2 tablets every 4 hours may be given to relieve pain (usually not to exceed 3g per 24 hours). Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) because they may contribute to other problems.

Antibiotics are not helpful unless the sting area become secondarily infected.

Do not cut into the wound or apply suction.

There is no treatment but if you have severe symptoms go to the hospital and if they are really bad then you might need anti-venom
