It is a device or electronic circuit that changes the frequency of an oscillator according to the amplitude of modulating signal. For instance, if the modulation is linear, the modulator changes the frequency proportional to the amplitude of the modulating voltage.

Frequency modulation is a method of impressing an audio frequency signal onto a radio frequency carrier wave, by changing the frequency of the carrier wave in response to the audio wave. The simplest method of doing this is to incorporate a microphone with its diaphragm attached to one of the plates of a capacitor and the other plate fixed. The microphone changes capacitance in response to audio vibrations. The microphone capacitor is part of the resonant circuit of an oscillator, and causes the oscillator output frequency to vary in response to the vibration of the microphone

What is the difference between frequency modulation and phase modulation?

The difference between frequency modulation and phase modulation is that with frequency modulation the angular frequency of the signal is modified while with the phase modulation, the phase angle of the signal is modified.

What is Modulation index in Frequency modulation?

Modulation Index is the ratio of the maximum deviation frequency to the frequency of modulation. In other words it is the ratio of the spread in frequency spectrum to the frequency that was used to modulate the carrier. For FM, modulation index is given by the formula mf= df/f where, mf=modulation index for FM df=difference in carrier frequency f=frequency of the signal
