It is designed to hang in the air, insulated from the hot metal walls of the oven, which could be (and usually are) hotter than the air or the food being cooked.
You can do this in either a conventional or a convection oven. If you use a conventional oven, I would rotate the roasting pan half way through the cooking process to compensate for any hot spots in the oven. If you use a convection oven (with the fan), cooking is more even because the fan blows the hot air around the food, but you have to remember to reduce cooking temperatures 50 degrees if you leave the convection function on.

A typical electric oven has a heating element, a length of metal that acts as an electrical resistor. As electrical current passes through, the heating element becomes hot. The oven will either be a convection oven or not. A non convection oven relies on the heating element warming the air, and this in turn warms the food. A convection oven uses circulating air inside the oven. Circulating the air causes faster heat transfer from the heating element to the air, and faster heat transfer from the air to the food than with simple heat conduction only.
