Spreadsheets would be used for all sorts of things in the hotel industry. Basically anything to do with numbers and finance. Things like keep a count of guests, getting the average of guests through the year, finding the lows and highs of guest numbers in the year, calculating profits, working out good prices to charge per room, forecasting possible profits in the future, working out if it is worth investing in the hotel and many, many other things.

MS Access is a lightweight small business database with a front end interface capability. To that end MS Access has the same general purpose regardless of industry. You can build a database and a user front end interface in Access that is used to manage the data within the database.
